Global Fair Trade Mission Statement 6-Jan-03

After nearly 60 years of ‘development,’ we live in a world of growing inequality and misery; a world in which the more aid flows south, the more debt grows and the more hard cold cash flows north; a world in which 840 million people go hungry everyday despite unprecedented levels of agricultural productivity; a world in which ‘Free Trade’ actually means prohibitive tariff barriers against southern products; a world, in short, that is not fair.  At Global Fair Trade, we are trying to address this inequality by reversing the flow of money and products so that southern producers earn a fair price for their wares and northern consumers are able to enjoy hand-made, one of a kind goods at reasonable prices.

Trade direct with producers will go further than aid in relieving poverty and our goal is to get as many southern producers as possible in touch with northern consumers.  We believe that only by supporting micro-enterprises and families in the south can we hope to change the balance of cash flows and improve people’s standard of living.  All of our products are made by people working for themselves or in cooperatives.  There is no child labour, no debt bondage, no inhumane wage rates, no loss of dignity for our producers.  Their products are beautiful and original and reflect the hours of labour they embody.  The only barrier for these producers is access to markets and that’s where we come in.  We are proud to bring you these products and the stories of the lives of the producers so that in the dirty business of buying and selling, we can help to forge connections that make a difference between us and them, the rich and the poor.
